LifeMINUS Sugar: The Final Hours

Written on January 2, 2009 by

As I write this, I only have two hours left. Two hours until I can have some crispy crunchy funnel cakes covered in delicious powdered sugar.

This week has been interesting. I wasn’t expecting it to be as much of a challenge as it turned out to be. Having self control wasn’t too hard, but finding food that was safe to eat was difficult. Nearly everything we consume on a day to day basis contains sugar to some degree. It’s not that our regular diet is unhealthy, necessarily. Our diet just needs to have balance. Overloading on anything is never healthy; moderation is key.

But enough preaching… LifeMINUS has been fun and has had some interesting reactions from everyone Ringl and I have talked with. Most people don’t understand why we do this, and I doubt Ringl and I really do either! It’s still quite a fun social experiment.

Food Consumed – Day 6:

  • Breakfast/Lunch: Bananas, Eggs and Bacon
  • Dinner: Cheeseburger with Mustard

Food Consumed – Day 7

  • Breakfast: Eggs and Cheese
  • Lunch: Chicken strips and fries from Whataburger
  • Dinner: Pizza

Overall, I ate way too much chicken and I overloaded on potatoes. What a sucky diet.

Well, Ringl and I wold like to make LifeMINUS a regular feature, but we want to hear from you. What would you like to see more of, or what would you like to see us do for the next LifeMINUS? Leave some comments and let us know!

LifeMINUS sugar – Day 4

I screwed up today. I consumed a saltine cracker. You may be thinking “I thought this was lifeMINUS sugar, not lifeMINUS delicious salty crackers.” Well that’s exactly what I was thinking. I was at Ringl’s house having some delicious taco soup his wife had cooked up when I grabbed some crackers to go with it. I ate one cracker and thoroughly enjoyed it, popped another one in the soup and then my mouth and Ringl’s wife made a comment about me eating “high fructose corn syrup loaded” crackers. I immediately stopped my chewing and mumbled out “Really?” Ringl and her then explained that they do indeed contain “sugar” and Ringl was banned from having them last week during his lifeMINUS. I then proceeded to the bathroom and spit out the delicious cracker.

But other than that little incident, I attempted to down some coffeeMINUS creamer and sugar; my opinion: disgusting. Watch the video for a little humor.

Food Consumed:

  • Breakfast: none… again. (I need to get some fruit!)
  • Lunch: LaHa’s delicious Fajitas
  • Dinner: Taco Soup and one saltine cracker

LifeMINUS sugar – Shaw's First Day

Written on December 28, 2008 by

I’ve been a little unsure about the whole LifeMINUS sugar thing. I couldn’t decide if it was going to be easy or difficult, but last night I realized it may be a bit more of a problem than I’d envisioned.

When I hit my REM cycle yesterday, I began dreaming I was in some normal family scenario: talking to relatives, eating food and the like. I found myself going after the dessert table and grabbing some delicious powdered-sugar-coated puppy chow. Once I realized what I’d just done,  I panicked and quickly spit out the puppy chow. My reaction was so strong that I actually woke up!

Other than invading my dreams, the first day of lifeMINUS sugar has been pretty easy. I had to reject a glass of soda that had already been poured, which wasn’t too difficult, but it did sadden me to see that delicious Coke go to waste.

At lunch I asked my grandmother if her coleslaw had any sugar in it. Coleslaw doesn’t seem like the kind of thing that would normally have sugar, but I had to be sure. Nana assured me that she didn’t add any sugar to her coleslaw.

Later in the afternoon I had to give Ringl’s wife (our “impartial” judge) a call to see if I could have some “sugar free” gum, to which she responded with a firm “No” due to the aspartame in the ingredients. My cousin who offered the gum was very understanding, though a bit confused.

The rest of the day I actually ate a heck of a lot better than I normally do:

Day One – Food Consumed:

  • Breakfast: Bar-B-Q sandwich (I don’t know that this was technically breakfast)
  • Lunch: Burger & Coleslaw
  • Dinner: Steak & Shrimp Hibachi, Rice, Vegetables and a Salad

Probably the hardest thing about this week (other than practically cutting myself off from caffeine, having to drink only water and actually needing to look at this nutrition labels) will be explaining to people exactly why I’m curious about sugar content. The best response I’ve given so far is that I’m on a fast.  Should people be more curious, I can give them the whole explanation of lifeMINUS; I’m just not so sure that people will catch on as to WHY we’re subjecting ourselves to this torture.

To which I say to you, “I hope you’re happy…”

LifeMINUS sugar: Ringl's finale

Written on December 27, 2008 by

So I haven’t been keeping anyone really updated as to the lifeMINUS sugar quest for the past couple days due to jumping back and forth between families. But let me try to concisely sum up what the past two days have been like.

Dang that pie looks good
Woah… chocolate covered peanut clusters
Who puts molasses in bread!
I would kill for a Cherry Pepsi

So I did it. I finished. LifeMINUS sugar complete. Shaw, it’s your turn.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a Dr. Pepper in the refridgerator with a ribbon tied to it.

LifeMINUS sugar: Day five

Written on December 24, 2008 by

First and foremost: Merry Christmas!

So far LifeMINUS sugar has been pretty good. I’ve been tempted many times in many ways but have abstained from the delicious powdery substance that I enjoy.

I can imagine today and tomorrow will be pretty difficult. I’m pretty upset about not eating sweet potato casserole, but I’ve seen just how much sugar goes into it so there’s no way I could justify it. Along the same line I’m preparing to visit two families and see chocolates, sweet beverages and candy of all sorts passed around like Pabst Blue Ribbon at a Leonard Skynard show. But like the teetotaler that I am, I will resist.

With the new year approaching I’ve been giving consideration to new year’s resolutions. Now I’m ordinarily against making statements advocating self-improvement because I’m happy with myself. In all seriousness there’s not a single thing about myself that I would change because I like who I am. But as I’m looking into the future it’s obvious that things are changing. I’m going to be gaining free time in some places of 2009 and one of my free nights is going to be taken up. All in all though, I’m gaining time.

So what should I do with that? I can think of tons of things I’d like to be able to do. Spending more time with my wife is obviously a plus. Then there are also several hobbies that I just haven’t touched in a while because I’ve been busy.

My best thought is to start a category on here called Hobby shop and tell you about things that I’ve been up to. The best part about that is that there is assured variety. One day you may come to find I’ve posted a video featuring skateboarding, and the next you could find a book or movie review (spoiler free, I promise). Let me know what you think!

LifeMINUS sugar: Day four

Written on December 23, 2008 by

These workdays right before Christmas are keeping me busy! Yesterday was a successful day of LifeMINUS sugar. But it’s getting a little more difficult. The Christmas-time sweets are a-plenty and finding food that doesn’t contain sugar is getting to be pretty difficult. Last night I grilled a hamburger patty and ate it with hot sauce. This whole thing has been weird.

I’m about to have an orange for breakfast and then I’ll get some coffee to sip on while I work.

Ordinarily I drink my coffee with a bit of creamer and two packets of Splenda. Since I’m living as if sugar doesn’t exist I’ll be drinking that coffee black. And since there’s sugar in the starlight mints I ordinarily have after coffee I will be dealing with coffee breath by staying in my office for the rest of the day.

LifeMINUS sugar: Day three

Written on December 22, 2008 by

Last night I ate chili and didn’t have any real difficulty with the exception of Shaw sitting in my house eating ice cream and telling me how good it was.

Also as I was walking to the bathroom we have a bag with double bubble gum hanging on the closet door and as it was somewhat of a habit I reached into the bag and pulled out a piece of gum. I then unwrapped it, popped it into my mouth and bit down. My eyes opened wide with shock and I thought to myself, “What have I done!” So I spit the gum into the toilet and started rinsing my mouth out. Then I grabbed the entire bag of gum, walked into the living room and threw it at my wife, “Get this filth out of my house!”

I probably shouldn’t have done that.

So anyhow I won’t be updating while I’m at work, but if I can make it happen, I’m planning on tacos for lunch.

I’ll let you all know how it goes after work!

LifeMINUS sugar: Day two

Written on December 21, 2008 by

I woke up this morning and wasn’t even thinking about sugar.

I’d like to call that a success, but I’m pretty sure it’s because I was still thinking about the Mario Kart game last night. Cassie and I were playing some Mario Kart earlier in the day and when Shaw came over he played with us. That’s when it got weird. Cassie started winning. Now before Cassie and I were married we played video games. Playing Dr. Mario with her is how I decided that I liked her, but she’s never been better than me at games. I’ve almost always been able to beat her without trying. But now when she starts to like a game she gets good at it, to the point that as we approached the finish line on some races all three of us would be standing up and screaming at each other hoping to gain some psychological edge that would guarantee a win over the other two. It was frustrating, but lotsa fun.

So I’m not sure how today’s LifeMINUS will be. I’m about to head to church where I ordinarily only have water. But lunch and after, who knows? Either way check in later to see just how it’s going!

Back home after burritos for lunch! I’m thinking I could do pretty well with lifeMINUS sugar if I just have tacos every day! Cassie’s back at the Mario Kart game and I’m starting to thing she’s getting a little obsessed. She double-starred the last grand prix she did.

Current mood: I’ve never liked water

LifeMINUS sugar: Day one

Written on December 20, 2008 by

I received a text today and it looked a little like this:

From: Shaw
Man… These donuts are delicious! I don’t know that I’ve ever tasted one so good.
10:51 am 12/20/08

So that’s how it’s going to be, huh? Well here’s how it’ll work. I’ll go about my day and share everything I eat and everything that I don’t eat. I’ll then follow each addition with a timestamp so that you can see my progress throughout the day. So keep coming back to see how I’m doing!

So far today I’ve eaten two eggs. And I’ve passed on an energy drink that claims to have no sugar, yet contains sucralose, and toast (because without jelly, what’s the point?). Going strong!

Cassie was eating SunChips and they smelled amazing! Planning on jambalya tonight!

Okay! So day one is almost down! I was thinking this would be pretty difficult. Well… earlier I thought I could hear an ice cream truck… and then I saw a milkshake running around and screaming “Don’t eat me! I contain lactose!” Very weird.

Anyhow, day one of seven is down. Living lifeMINUS sugar is difficult, but more than that is seeing just how many foods have sugar in them. As I look through my cabinets and pantry I’m seeing even the so-called “healthy” foods have sugar of some sort in them.

LifeMINUS Sugar: Candyland

Written on December 18, 2008 by

Despite my best efforts, I cannot prove that my wife stuffed the ballot box, so the very first LifeMINUS will be LifeMINUS Sugar.

Now I’ve been researching this, and apparently living without any sugar of any type at all would be somewhat of a poor decision. One of the best explanations I read on how your body handles sugars can be found here.

So the question comes up: Where’s the line? Now I’m sure some will disagree with me, but tough. For the purposes of  LifeMINUS Sugar, there will be no (as in zero, not a chance, not if held at gun point) refined or processed sugar. We will be examining ingredient labels and using common sense to rule out foods that we will be livingMINUS. A list is available that lists several different kinds of sugars that are out. Pretty much anything that ends with “-ose” such as fructose, glucose and my personal favorite: sucrose. Also on the previously mentioned list are sucralose and aspartame, better known as Splenda and Nutrasweet. Now I wanted to allow artificial sweeteners, but really, what fun is LifeMINUS if you don’t go all out? So to be clear… pretty much all that will be allowed are the basic sugars that you would find in and apple or banana. And if there are any disputes, it will be the call of my wife (a harsh judge indeed!).

Speaking of going all out, it wasn’t until last night that I realized that this upcoming week is Christmas. I wanted to back out and reschedule at first. But again, what fun would that be?

Check back in Saturday to see which of us has to go first! And don’t forget to offer us warm Krispy Kreme doughnuts as often as possible!

Also: Would anyone be interested in a t-shirt with the LifeMINUS logo Shaw made on his last post? It could even feature a Unibear on the back. If you would, leave a comment and say so. We’re not making anything if you don’t want it.
